UBC Computer Science Tri-mentoring Program
Organization: UBC Computer Science Department (chair: Michele Ng)
Role: Student Representative, Volunteer Organizer, Mentor and Mentee
Dates: Sept. 2002 - Present
I got involved with tri-mentoring in its first year, when it was just a pilot, and have stayed with it as its grown to involve almost 300 people.
I started as a mentee, but have since become more involved. I helped to organize the events, brainstorm and execute recruiting of new mentors/mentees, and recruit new volunteers to the program. I also helped with general outreach/spreading awareness among students and other (faculty-support oriented) campus groups.
At the start of each program cycle, I also work with Michele and a small group of other volunteers to go through all the applicants and match them with mentors and mentees, taking into account their preferences, interests, program-type, etc. We try our best to pair people with their best possible match, and we try really hard to accommodate everyone and make them feel comfortable, especially given factors like gender and age. We try to be as conscientious as possible.
